A note about the scoring: the hair, face and outfit scores are out of 10, 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. The overall score is a letter grade based on my overall opinion of the doll.
Comments: Aside from the outfit, there's not much to separate this Shino from the original maid version. Her lip color is darker pink, and, in my opinion, more attractive than the original's, but if you already have a blonde Shino you probably won't need this one. Her outfit is a cute black velvet dress with matching bunny ears. It's not as elaborate as some of the other versions', (with the exception of the swimsuit ones ^^) but all in all she makes a good display piece. A downside is that the dress stains soft vinyl--it's nowhere near the face, so it doesn't pose any danger, but don't try to put it on a Jenny doll!
I've mentioned on my Shino page that I've noticed irregularities in her eyeprint. They give her face character but some people may find that the other Lost and Dark Angels have nicer eyeprints. Her eyes are a lovely golden color, though, and they match her hair well. This is the only Shino that my sister and I own, so we're very happy with her ^^;;..... If you already have a Shino you might want to buy another doll.
Overall Grade: B
Comments: Amanda has an unusual head mold compared to the other Lost and Dark Angels that makes her a unique doll. The brightness of her hair and eyes contrasts well with her neutral makeup and black clothing. I prefer this version to the Nightwear one because of her body and hairstyle. This doll has longer hair and pigtails as opposed to the second version's short haircut.
The black trenchcoat was a good idea for a urban-type doll. However, the outfit beneath "pushes the outside of the envelope" in my opinion. I would've preferred the top to be paired with sleek pants instead of a micro-wrap skirt. Or a sheath dress....it almost seems like her under-clothing was an afterthought. If you want to redress her, she's a source for great accessories (shoes, thigh high stockings, etc) ^___^.......but they really don't belong all on one doll. But hey, these dolls are made to be redressed! So have fun ^^.
Overall grade: A-
Comments: Not for the faint of heart? I personally love Lost Angel Maria, but her boyish looks might turn off collectors in search of more glamorous dolls. Her red hair and eyes make her a doll that wears costumes well, but she might be a little difficult to dress in street-type clothing. If you leave her in her original outfit you'll have a wonderful display piece ^__^.....she looks like she was born to be a nurse.
If you examine her face closely, you'll note that she's wearing dark brown eyeliner. Her eyeprint is unusual because there's no dark shade at the top of the eye. She has a unique placid stare. ^-^
I first saw Maria in the back section of a Neodoll magazine, along with the prototype of Junko and a blonde doll. She models some adorable dresses. ^^ If you want a more childlike doll that looks good in feminine outfits, do try her. With her odd red on red coloring I admit that she's an acquired taste. But she's one of my favorite dolls ^__^.
Overall Grade: A (If you like that kind of thing ^^)
Comments: Few dolls have the beauty and grace of Claudia. This version has lovely silver hair with side-swept bangs and a lavender satin party dress. Her hair is a little bit thin, but it gives her a romantic delicacy complemented by her violet eyes. If you buy this extremely hard-to-find doll you'll be very happy.
Her beauty not withstanding, I feel I have to say this: I HATE her outfit! It's way too fluffy and frumpy for such a delicate-looking doll. Find her something elegant, a Chinese dress, anything but this purple nightmare! >_< It's not even worth trying on another doll.
^_^;;;........just the same, she's a great doll to own. She's very fun to redress and pose. I prefer this version to the others because I don't care for the triangular bangs on the original. If you were to put the original Angel Claudia's outfit on Party Dress Claudia you might just have the perfect doll.
Overall Grade: A (just get that dress off her >_<!)
Comments: This was the second Lagla I bought. She's unusual because she has long black hair. Most Laglas have some form of short hairstyle, whether it be red, black or brown ^__^...finding this doll was a real treat. But of course, I think you should buy every Lagla out there ^^. ! The NEO body can be a plus or a minus, depending on your tastes. I personally don't care for it, so I plan on replacing it....but it does feature more articulation than the Excellent body, but it's also more fragile. My doll's limbs fall off every so often. It's easy enough to slide them back in, but the real pain comes with the waist joint falls apart (argh!!).
That aside, this doll is well worth getting on the grounds that it's Lagla and has long hair ^__^. Mine didn't come in her original slip but that would probably be nice to have. You should never pass up Lagla; her eyes are amazing, and she's one of the rare dolls that seems to have several expressions. She can look cold or sweet depending on her outfit and the lighting ^_^.
Overall Grade: A
Comments: This version of Lagla is very pretty! Her yellow eyes look even more striking in this version against her tanned skin. This was the first Lagla I bought, and I'm extremely satisfied with her. My only gripe with her is the Elegant body she comes with. The tanned version is the prototype for the new Slender Type Elegant body and is very attractive, but difficult to pose. I like my dolls to be able to sit down occasionally, and all I've been able to do with this Lagla is pose her arms a little ^^;;......also, pulling clothes over the stiff, sticky limbs is a grueling task. If you want to dress her in more revealing outfits, this shouldn't be a problem. After all, the Elegant body is meant to be shown off ^_^!
The hair on this version is beautiful. Miami Pink Lagla has bobbed black-brown hair with plum streaks that turn pink when exposed to gentle(!!) heat. Her swimsuit is also nice (I like the sarong and anklet!). Some collectors might be disappointed that the outfit isn't more elaborate, but since this is a summer release doll it certainly is appropriate ^____^.
All in all, this is a lovely doll. Her coloring is striking and the tanned Elegant body, while difficult to pose and dress, looks great in a swimsuit. Why not give her a try?
Overall Rating: A-
Comments: In one word: exquisite. Her face and hair, that is. Her outfit is another story ^___^;;.....but hey, no one's perfect! Buy her anyway. You'll thank me later.
It's too bad that Zarla is such a bad girl ^^;;......with her soft white hair and pastel make-up she can look very nice. The jewel under her eye is a great touch. It's one of the only things that's keeping me from finding a tanned Excellent body for her. I don't want to knock it off! The Elegant body isn't such a bad thing for her, anyway. I don't like her original leotard outfit at all, but with her exotic looks you won't want to dress her in anything heavy or fluffy ^^. The outfit she's wearing in that picture in Dolpa File SP of her torturing Claudia suits her. I 'd like to sew that for her some time!
All in all, Zarla is a great find. Beautiful hair, beautiful face, the outfit is a little disappointing but you'll probably want to redress her anyway. Give the Elegant body a try--you probably won't have much to complain about because Zarla is just so pretty ^___^.
Overall Grade: A+
Comments: ^____^ Raughla has a lovely face, like a porcelain doll's. She looks very different from the other Dark Angels because she has the #11 head. Her head is proportionally much smaller than the A and B type heads.....so she looks a little strange standing next to more anime-ish dolls. She's beautiful nonetheless. I'm also a Takara Jenny doll collector, and I admit that I have a weak spot for dolls with dewy shoujo eyes ^-^;;;......If she weren't an evil 13 year old, I can easily picture Raughla as a ballet dancer. People who exclusively collect anime dolls might be disappointed by her more realistic features, but in my opinion, she is not a doll to miss ^___^.
Unlike most of the other Lost and Dark Angels, Raughla's head isn't painted.....I'm not sure if Volks currently only paints the heads of dolls with short hair, but it was a pleasant surprise. With the exception of the Heartful Fair Lagla, all the other Volks dolls I own have painted heads. I've always wondered if it was a trick to use less hair on the doll.....
Raughla's outfit is a cute Gothic Lolita-type dress that goes well with her light coloring. Just the same, I really want to redress this girl! She looks like she'd be able to wear any type of clothing. But keep her feminine ^___^. Her girly look is part of her facade.
Overall Grade: A
Comments: Guh......the original Lagla.......she belongs to my sister, but I'm content to gawk at her. *^-^* All Laglas are wonderful, but what's special about this girl is her outfit. She's supposed to be an "evil maid," but she looks like some kind of Gothic Warrior Princess....^____^;;.......I'm not sure what that thing on her head is supposed to be, but I love it! Great boots, too. This doll, unlike the "real" original Lagla, has the NEO body instead of Excellent D. Also, she comes with a scythe (some assembly required) and a cape. I think you need a drill to put the scythe together, and I prefer the doll without the cape....but why be so picky? If you don't have the original Lagla, you'll have to get this one. ^_^ I wonder if they're going to re-release Gjinalu in the same manner? That would be terrific ^^!
This Lagla has black-brown hair in a short, angled hairstyle. Like all Laglas, she has yellow eyes and barely any lip color. Her face is a nice contrast with her elaborate outfit. ^___^. She's worth getting even if you have another Lagla. So go get her :D!
Overall Grade: A+
Comments: I hadn't originally planned on buying her, but the first version was the first Volks doll I ever wanted. I suppose I could've still bought the original release somewhere.......the outfit on this one is definitely not as nice but she has the added plus of having the New Excellent Mini B body ^__^.....that's enough to convince me! If you plan on redressing her, by all means, buy the second release of Kisara. The quality of Volks dolls has been improving lately, and the new mini body is a lot sturdier than the previous one, which had a tendency to lose limbs ^^;;.......
With the exception of the outfit, this doll is identical to the first version. Kisara is adorable! ^o^ The mini head mold is very cute, and I love her pink hair. Don't let the fact that she's a mini doll discourage you! Kisara is at the center of the Lost Angel universe, and no Volks collection is complete without her. I admit that I don't care for the second version's outfit at all (in fact, I changed it as soon as I received her ^___^) but the fact that she has a non-shiny New Excellent body makes her well worth it. .
Overall Grade: A (Yes, I do know that Amanda has a lower grade in spite of her slightly-better outfit, but this Kisara has a new Excellent body! >_<)
Comments: Tida is a beautiful doll! With her flowing robes and long, tendrilly hair she's more of a display piece than anything. The beads on her outfit are fragile, so be careful not to break the string! Kristen did, and she had to restring them ^___^. Tida is her doll, after all. Her eyes are a wonderful liquidy brown color. Tida is one of those dolls you really have to see in person to enjoy. Photographs never seem to do her justice ^___^;;.......
I know that of the three artist dolls released by Volks (Hazuka, Curo and Tida) she was the least popular. I have no idea why! Is she too classy? Is it because her body is New Excellent A? If you like shoujo manga, you'll love Tida. She's one of the only dolls I've seen (besides the original Lagla ^^) that's worth keeping in her original outfit. If you do want to redress her, she'd look wonderful in a regency-style gown. Anyone want to strip their Gracy Jenny ^o^?
Overall Grade: A+
Comments: Eh heh heeeh...^___^.....I love this little Nakoruru. There are quite a few Nakoruru dolls on the market. Most of them are made by Takara. The mini doll by Volks seems to receive less attention than the 27 cm variety, but I think she's by far the cutest. Her face is extremely detailed, her dark blue eyes seem to be forever looking up at you in adoration *^___^*. I admit I was shocked by the size of the mini dolls when I bought Shaolin, but when I saw Nakoruru on the Volks website with the new releases I fell in love. I had to have her ^o^! I'm not a big fan of the "girly" video game characters (like Ellis from Battle Arena Toshinden O_O). I'm hardly the kind of person to jump on the Nakoruru bandwagon, but this doll is one of my favorites. Volks character dolls can sometimes be disappointing, but she certainly was not so ^_^. I wish I could find those To Heart mini dolls that were released a while back in limited quantities....;_;...
My one complaint about this doll is the quality of her outfit. While it is cute (especially the headdress) the fabric is nothing to be impressed with. Her dress feels flimsy. I wish they would've made it in several layers, or constructed it out of something more substantial. But her shoes are adorable *^_^*.
If you like sweet-looking mini dolls, please buy this Nakoruru. She is, in my opinion, the cutest mini Volks has ever made. Yes, even cuter than Kisara! >_<
Overall Grade: A- (well, she doesn't have a new Excellent body...;_;)
Comments: What a pretty doll! ^_^ I had admired her in the black and white section of Neodoll, but had no idea who she was. In reality, she's a character doll of a Japanese idol named Rei Yoshii. She looks nothing like her ^__^;;......this particular doll is of the character she played in the live-action show "Masked Angel Rosetta," named Jin Asuka. I just call the doll Asuka.^^. There are a few other Rei Yoshii dolls out there, but I liked this one the best. She has a cute shag haircut and a sweet little face.^^
Eh heh......she also happens to have the same eyeprint as Lost Angel Ming-rei, save that her eyes are brown instead of green. That's kind of cheap, isn't it? But the doll's pretty, so who cares ^^? She came with the non-posable Beauty-type body, which I swapped for New Excellent A. It's an extra expense, but well worth it. If you buy this doll and do as I did, she'll be one of your best friends. She looks good in nearly every outfit you put on her. She comes in a school uniform that isn't going to impress anyone, but you won't want to leave her in that for long....
Overall Grade: B+ (A if you give her a posable body^^)
Comments: I hear that the show she's from isn't very good *^^*. I admit that Shaolin (a ditzy, Belldandy-esque type) isn't even the kind of character I'd like, but this is a very cute doll, and I'm more than happy to have her in my collection. ^_^
Her face is perfect. ^^ Some people may be turned off the fact that she's a mini-Volks doll, but the mini-head mold really suits her. If you compare her to the larger Tsukuda Hobby version, you'll see that the smaller ones are sometimes sweeter *^_^*...The beads in her hair are so cute! Her outfit is nice... I wish it had been made of heavier material, but it's nothing to be upset about ^^.
I know that character dolls are sometimes hard to sell. Even if the doll is beautiful, people might not want to buy it if it's of a character they're not familiar with. Don't let this stop you from buying this doll. She's adorable, with lovely purple hair and a face that would charm anyone ^_^. That picture of her that used to be on the Volks page (and is on her box) is frightening. She doesn't look like that, honest >_<!
....Speaking of which, isn't that Yellow Submarine Lin Minmei doll gorgeous? ^_^ The one with the long hair, in the concert dress. Of course, I hate Minmei's guts, but what I wouldn't give for that doll....so tragically out of production.....;_;....
Overall Grade: A
Comments: This is the green-haired version of Noix de Rome's Rainbow Girl, a mini version of Keiko available with a variety of hair colors. This doll doesn't belong to me (of course -_-) but I like her so much I'd love to get a couple more....maybe the pink one, or the blue one? The red one?
Her hair is cut in a cute, candy-colored bob. As usual, Noix de Rome's hair is very high quality ^___^. Her face isn't exactly the same as Keiko's; the features are more sharp, and I admit I do think her little face is more suited to the Ninie body that comes with this doll than the original Keiko's SAJ body.
Her outfit is standard Noix de Rome fare: a light green vinyl halter dress and matching vinyl boots. It suits her, but eventually, one would want to change it for something less monochrome ^_6. The Ninie body is a nice alternative to the somewhat spindly mini Excellent body. I don't care for the rubber hands (they almost feel like they could be torn off if you aren't careful) but the rest of the body feels good and solid ^___^.
So why not buy her? I'm not sure how available this dolls are currently, but if you can get your hands of one I'm sure you'll want another. ^^
Overall Grade: A
Comments: I had convinced myself that she wouldn't be that great, but she really is! ^o^ She's not mine (of course) but I'm proud to have her in my household ^__^. I love everything about this doll. I love her eyes, her two toned hair, her white skin, her outfit....^^ she's just so darn well-coordinated. She's all the colors that I love.
I'm not sure if her look would work well in any other form. Maybe that's why the original version has spiked in value....the Heartful Fair version has bangs and normal skin tone. Dolla has a low forehead (her eyes are positioned higher on her face than some of the other dolls, probably to make her look more adult) and, like human beings with similar facial structure (like me, for example -__-) she would not look good with bangs. Her grey eyes and coral lips are a startling contrast with her white skin. She looks like a flower *^_^*. Would she look as nice if it weren't for her interesting play on color? I'm not so sure....^^;;......but I love how she looks.
Her outfit is the kind of thing I want to try on all my dolls. I'm so thankful Volks kept her in all cool tones! Her matte body is a plus, too. It's making all my white-skinned custom dolls jealous. ^^
In her box, she doesn't look as nice. You really have to take her out and fluff up her hair to admire her. She's hard to find now, but go look for her! She's a terrific doll, and who knows? Volks might decide to re-release her.
Overall Grade: A+
Comments: Cute ^_^! Really cute ^o^! Rei was designed by the Japanese doll artist Kaname Byakko (of Keiko fame) and just happens to have the same head mold and face as Hazuka, the artist doll that was released early this year. I don't have Hazuka, so I don't care ^^....standing alone, Rei is a great doll to have. She's the first full-sized Volks doll to have pink hair!
I had been anticipating her release for quite some time. I love pink hair, and I saw her sketch on Kaname Byakko's page and fell in love ^___^....pastel/black combinations always intrigue me. I was worried that her head might look too big compared to the other Volks dolls'. I guess her headmold is supposed to look like the modified anime doll heads Kaname Byakko uses. Maybe it's because I have Multi, but I do not think her head is too big, not at all ^_^....I'm sure I was just rationalizing not getting her because I thought I wouldn't be able to find her.....^^
Her outfit is pretty cute, but not particularly well made. I took it off her to dress her up for a picture and never felt like putting it back on. I think her dress might stain soft vinyl--not a problem for Rei-chan, but keep it away from Jenny! Her apron is adorable, as are her shoes. I like the pink socks ^_6.
So go buy Rei. She's really cute, and one of my favorite dolls. If you already have Hazuka, you might not want her, but she has the new Excellent B body! Always a plus! And she has pink hair....^^;;
Comments: This version of Gjinalu is great for someone like me who hasn't had any luck finding this particular Dark Angel and desperately wants the original ^___^;;;.....I had initially set my sights on either the first edition or the Super Lingerie version, but had no luck in finding them for under 30,000 yen. I can imagine that someone who has the original version wouldn't want to buy this one. I wonder why Volks doesn't want to make a version of Gjinalu with a different hair color?
You can consider the Heartful Fair Gjinalu to be a fusion of the the first two versions: she has the long hair of the original with the smooth cut of the Super Lingerie version. Very nice ^o^! Setting aside the fact that she isn't particularly innovative, this doll would be a lovely edition to any collection. If you have the Nice Green version, they would complement each other well. Her purple hair is so smooth and shiny, like colored glass ^___^......tee hee..n_n...I really love this doll. Mine came in a beige slip. I haven't changed her out of it because I think it's pretty cute, but I wonder if any would feel cheated that she came in such a skimpy outfit? Well, it is lace...
Heh....Kristen says she thinks that Gjinalu looks like Nuriko from Fushigi Yuugi. With those droopy eyes...maybe. ^_^
Her NEO body is kind of a pain. My doll's arm keeps falling off! Until Volks releases a version of her with a New Excellent body, though, I can't complain. Those old shiny bodies are just as troublesome. And then there's the Elegant body...
Overall Grade: A- (A if you don't have another purple-haired Gjinalu)
Comments: Margaret is a very pretty doll. Maybe she's not that popular, because she, like Raughla, has the #11 head and looks considerable more human than the other Lost and Dark Angels, but I think she's wonderful. ^_^ Her long, straight, black-brown (yes, that is the legitimate name for the color, I'm not calling it that because I'm simple ^^;) hair and green eyes are very nice, and I love her orange-y lip color! She looks like a princess from the Middle Ages. Her expression is considerably more mischievous than Raughla's..it's odd that she's supposed to be the "good" one!
It's a pity that her dress is so ugly. It's not poorly made, it's just....inappropriate. Margaret has a diminutive stature that would be overwhelmed in heavy outfits. She lacks the cartoon-y features of the other Lost Angels, so why put her in a dress that looks like a costume? ^_^;;;
I have a hard time believing she's 13. Just the same, she's a great doll that's worth a try despite her apparent unpopularity. I bet she'd look nice in Azone clothes! And she has a New Excellent body.....^^
Comments: Hmm......here's the clincher. Doesn't everyone have a problem with this poor boy ^^? I admit that his hair is rather..interesting (CLANG!) but my doll doesn't look that bad. It seems that there's been some variations in hair length and style. I wonder why?
Kuniyoshi was designed by the famous custom doll artist Kyon, so his face is marvelous. Those eyes! ^o^ At first they look plain, but if you examine them closely you'll see a kaleidescope of colors. His makeup (ahem!) is a nice neutral color. Spiky hair and all, Kuniyoshi is a very handsome boy.
His outfit is pretty dull. I would've at least liked to see some snaps on his jacket! I guess he's supposed to be dressed as a "carefree" pilot. ^____^ His sneakers are awfully cute. I don't think Volks sells those separately. (?)
Kuniyoshi is quite a mixed bag. Even with his flaws, his nice face and limited number (I doubt there'll be another version of him) give him a lot of appeal. He certainly has a special place in my collection! There's a shortage of male commercial dolls out there, so why not give him a try? Your female dolls can take turns dating him, and if his hair really bothers you, they can always pick on him instead ^_^!
Overall Grade:A-(his hair looks like a mushroom cloud, but he has such a pretty face!)
Comments: Love that cape! Of the two Kyon boys released by Volks, Keiichi is the one that most resembles a coldly beautiful woman ^O^......he's not a nice boy, and he doesn't look like one, either. I guess he's the more popular one, but I'm not really sure ^___^. This particular doll isn't mine, but he sure is fun to look at!
He looks like a male model. The whites of his eyes are almost skin-tone, which gives him an overall subtle look. I'm amazed about how "brown" he looks. You'd think he's right out of a photograph taken with a sepia filter. ^^ I can imagine that you'd see this artsy boy browsing through a museum or gallery, and he'd give you the brush-off every time you'd try to talk to him. ^^....
His outfit is much nicer than Kuniyoshi's. It's my favorite thing about him! He might look a little funny redressed in more casual outfits (though I've never tried). If you like pretty boys, go buy him! You might want to get Kuniyoshi, too, because the two of them seem to be pretty good friends (wink wink nudge nudge). XD
Overall Grade: A
Comments: I know that Azone dolls aren't particularly popular with collectors outside of Japan, but I always look forward to buying them, sometimes even more than Volks dolls ^___^! Not only are their hair and faces adorable, but they come in the greatest outfits. This version of Sahra, Azone's most popular character doll, has short brown hair, light brown/hazel eyes, and comes dressed in a cute school uniform with a cape. Think of her as Keiichi Date as a girl ^o^!
The original release of Sahra has long blond hair and blue eyes. Up until recently, most Sahras have had similar coloring. I think that this Sahra in particular is special because of her boyish haircut. She definitely is "different from her usual self!"
I haven't redressed this doll yet. Her outfit is typical Azone fare, high quality and not too flashy. School Days Sahra works well as a display piece, but please feel free to dress her up in a variety of outfits! She has the Dynamite SAJ body, and will fit into most Takara Jenny outfits as well as Azone and Noix de Rome outfits.
I find that a lot of collectors don't like Sahra because of her big eyes and unusual head mold. This notwithstanding, if you like cute dolls even just a little bit, please give her a try. She'll be a welcome addition to any anime or Jenny doll collection.
Overall Grade: A+ (She comes with a much better outfit than most Volks dolls, and for 1,000 yen less ^o^!)
